I'm sorry that this happened and I hope there will be more done about dangers of loads poorly tied down in pickup trucks, on car rooftops, etc. 2 Phoenix police officers injured in crash near Tucson By Jamar Younger ARIZONA DAILY STAR Tucson, Arizona | Published: 11.13.2009Two Phoenix police officers were injured Friday on Interstate 10 after a mattress flew off of a pickup truck and struck their motorcycle, authorities said. The victims were part of a group of at least 15 off-duty officers traveling on motorcycles eastbound on I-10 near Colossal Cave Road, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. A pickup truck was passing the group when the mattress fell off the truck and hit the officers. The officers, a man driving the motorcycle and a female passenger, were taken to University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. I dropped my bike off at the shop this morning for a service, and my mechanic reminded me of something I had forgotten, or perhaps never quite realized. A while back, he had rebuilt my whole top end. Without getting into the whole story, he thought I had bent intake valve stems, but it turned out to be excessive carbon buildup preventing the valves from seating. We discussed possible causes, and the one that stuck in my memory the most was my early riding habit of keeping the revs too low (I had learned better by then, but what was done was done). I had a theory that the previous owner had done so as well. What I had forgotten discussing was my use of Shell gas. When a choice of which gas station to use comes down to brand, Shell is usually toward the bottom of my list, but the station most conveniently located to my house is a Shell so I'd probably been getting 90% of my gas there. It turns out that the additives they put in to "clean" your engine actually coke it up pretty good--at least for motorcycles. My mechanic said that afterward he had discussed it with other motorcycle mechanics, and the word on the street is that Shell gas causes carbon buildup in bikes. But apparently Chevron's additives do help clean things out. Just thought I'd pass that little nugget along.

http://gizmodo.com/5403423/neurostar-tms-depression-therapy-system-first-to-be-given-fda-approval"Nonetheless, trials on 164 patients with unipolar, non-psychotic major depressive disorder using the device proved that treatment with short magnetic field pulses to the left prefrontal cortex can be a viable alternative to medication. After 30 40-minute daily sessions, half of the patients in the trial experienced significant improvement, while a third reported complete resolution. Plus, the only statistically significant side effect was mild discomfort in the treatment area. Currently, patients can receive NeuroStar treatments in a psychiatrist's office while remaining completely awake and alert."

Notes augmented
We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!
Product tweaks and bug kill
- In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
- If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
- The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
- If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
- If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
- Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)
New FCK fixes rich text editor!
- We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
- When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
- RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0

- The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers
LiveJournal Cares
We’re pleased to introduce you to lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.

Criminal Minds has Gavin Rossdale covering Joy Division's "Love will tear us apart". Pretty damn good actually ...

I hope the whole song gets released. And why is it that rockstars turn into pretty good actors?

godfucking damnit. today was a wash from the moment i got home: the ants are (a) not on fire and (b) not dead, although they are definitely meandering about sickly. (c) my apartment smells like paint for no fathomable reason. (d) a very large orb weaver has put a web across my laundry room door, which means i have nothing to wear for tomorrow. (e) or friday. (f) or saturday, at which point i will bicycle all my shit to the laundromat, rather than attempt to battle with this (ok, it's not that big, fuck off). (g) i wanna cookie!

day three: dear journal, access to the database is still not available, and everywhere i look it seems there is data; it appears to swirl around me in great clouds - but it is a cruel mirage; i am taunted by it and desire nothing more than to quench my parched network connection with it. i'm adding overloaded constructors and other methods to the classes i've been building, but these only provide tiny amounts of nutrition. i'm worried i may not make it through another night. sometime in the early morn, my humble abode was attacked by invaders. the lion cub, whom i have rightfully placed my trust in, has become a stalwart companion, ever by my side. he bravely chased the attackers off, but i fear they will return, and in greater numbers as i have no doubt they are aware on some level of the bag of kibble but mere yards from the battle's site. this will strain the tenuous hold on the our tiny demesne beyond reckoning. at least i'm warm - the humming of fans blows toward me life-giving heat from the CPUs. i am firmly convinced that all hope is not lost.

1 - Update: my bike is a tough lil mofo. New clutch cable and she's good to go. One of the mirror mounts was intact enough to attach an old stock mirror I'd had, and the speedometer still even works. So it's just cosmetic damage that's left. Unlike me, however - I did go to the doctor and turns out I have a fractured rib. For a while I thought I also had a pinched nerve, but I now think it was just a pulled muscle... a massage with a tennis ball cleared up 80% of the discomfort/pain. Also, my Garmin and helmetcam are fine (though I'm still working on recovering that footage). 2 - Last weekend, Keith Code came to give a talk & lead a few drills. $10 for the lecture, and another $10 if you were lucky enough to get a slot with Keith or one of his instructors. With my injuries, I didnt feel comfortable riding (haven't ridden since, but will this weekend), but I attended to listen and watch... ( and take photos )3 - I <3 my new Held Steves. Thank you all for recommending them. They're so comfy I want to ride just so I can use them. I keep putting them on while watching tv. Though there is a seam in the index finger knuckle that I hope wont be too uncomfortable...

Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett - better known as the (main) masterminds behind fictional rock-giants Gorillaz - have enlisted the one and only Alan Moore to pen the libretto for their next opera project. They made a splash with their adaptation of Journey to the West to stage, so I can only imagine that adding in Alan Moore to the mix can only result in something incredibly awesome. This is, of course, in addition to the upcoming third Gorillaz album - likely the last, given how little Jamie Hewlett seems to like drawing the characters these days.

..on which day did occur the following events: i spilled coffee on my shirt. i spilled coffee on the floor. i spilled coffee on my clean shirt. i spilled coffee on my cat. i spilled coffee on my even cleaner shirt*. all true! except maybe for the bit about the cat. but i'm sure he snickered at my misfortune and i wanted to say that i spilled it on him, so there, i did. but the rest is still all true, and will continue to be so for at least the next 45 seconds. inconsistent accessibility: property type '...SomethingApp.nodeTypes' is less accessible than property '...appInfo.nodeType' - to which i say: <big><i>air guitar!!!!</i></big> [x] enable HTML-formatting (?) air guitar!!!!*this was, admittedly, much later in the day. the report that is being generated by code i am working with is titled population served. i'm waiting for just the right moment to drop a soylent green joke into a staff meeting. the ironic part of that is that i don't think anyone except the owner would get it && appreciate it, but he's on mutha-fuckin boat in the caribbean right now. also, i want to write a song called the ballad of the undistributed middle. music: my team lead playing INXS in her office |

okay, i've heard enough people rant about how great last night was that i've decided to pay the whopping sum necessary to go see the pixies tonight. it appears to be sold out, however there are a veritable plethora of people selling tickets at face value on CL. have any of you who went the prior two nights observed people selling tickets outside at sane prices or anything, thus saving me an annoying trip down to whereever for a dubious CL deal? also, msjen, i am totally sorry i flaked on buying yours for yesterday. my night got all screwy and i couldn't go. blek.

Smashed my right thumb on saturday on the closet door that has been still sitting in plastic and not installed) while running to see what was the outside temp on the thermometer. Hurts to use the mouse after a few minutes, so I am screwed till it fully heals. Have to keep cracking it to ease the tension. Wish it had been my left hand thumb instead, but nope! GRRR!!!!!! It's swollen and has a nice bruise on the left side of the knuckle. Last month, smashed my little toe on a frame that was resting on the floor. That still hurts when I bend it too far.
Oh, and my tonsillectomy was approved! I am glad tha tit was since I was told by the Doctor it probably wouldn't and I would have to fight the decision, but nope! All in my favor thank goodness. What a relief! This will be my first surgery, but wait, do stitches count?
Spent way too much money on Saturday, over $600 and not on stuff for me. It was sealer, hay for Sunshine, wood, and concrete mix. How exciting, right?
Need to get my hair cut soon, I gotta copy Amy of course.

I took volta's spanky new Ulysses for a ride yesterday. It was a 15-minute loop, not a whole lot of flogging involved, but a couple of nice twisty roads and a blast on a numbered route netted a "holy crap!" from me. I've borrowed a lot of bikes. I enjoy riding different motorcycles. This one... this one was different all right. Generally after a test ride I'm either happy to give the bike back or could see having one in the garage, you know, in addition to the bikes we already have. This Uly, though ... I'd replace Rosie with one. No, really. Except for the bone-jarring idle this thing is everything I've ever wanted in a bike. Totally neutral seating posture (stand up whenever the heck you want and stay there with zero prep), though slide your ass back and you're leaned in and sporty, slide your ass forward and you're as sit-up-and-beg as an R12GS. Super quick steering makes this heavy bike very, very nimble. It's nice and tall. Its v-twin engine delivers surprisingly useful power pretty much anywhere. Its handling is effortless, and it falls into turns like magic. The engine is happy to crank on and on around redline, and it's just as happy to poke along at 3K rpm, though it doesn't feel as ...tightly-wound as the boxer twin on my beemer ... not sure how to explain that... not as much engine braking? Everything is where you want it to be. It's extremely thoughtfully engineered, comfortable, and a hooligan machine all at once. The suspension is very well-sorted. The wind protection is small but good enough, and the windscreen combined with the bark-busters keeps the wind off your important parts. With a Harley engine. I know, I know, but seriously. This thing is damn well-sorted. Bummer about HFD kicking you to the curb, Eric. You made a fine motorcycle.

Apparently the "unlimited" data plan I've got...and will pay for each month...has a monthly cap of 5 gigs. They did not explain THAT to me and now I'm cross. I'm not sure if I'll use that much, but hell, I don't know how I can tell? And with $50 charge for every gig over, I can't afford it. Damn it, I don't want to return this phone. Also, there was no hot water today. mood: bitchy |

| My Bandit saga |

So. Remember how I had that problem with the broken overflow pipe? Well, it broke down on me again, and again, and one time it even broke down on its way back from the dealers after they cleaned it out again! So finally my patience wore out and I took it back to them and told them to do whatver they had to do to make it work. Keep it for as long as they needed to if that meant I'd get it back with the problem resolved. Plan A was to buy a secondhand tank. They couldn't find one. Plan B was to buy a brand new tank. The bike's so old, they couldn't find one. Plan C was to do what they originally said was too difficult - Repair the broken overflow pipe. So that's what they did and now, a month later, she's still running sweet. The mechanic did the most awesome repair I've ever seen and he had to do it all through the opening for the petrol cap! In the end the pipe was too broken to repair so he had to replace it and tack a new one in place and, wow, seriously. You can barely see the repair. A couple of scuffs in the paint around the overflow hole and that's it. Brilliant piece of work and the Bandit's been sweet ever since. He also took the rubber overflow out from where the previous lying scum of an owner had hidden it so it could run free, only to discover that Suzuki had designed it so that anything that came out of it dripped... Straight onto the exhaust! Who the hell thought THAT was a good idea? One crack in the pipe and you're pissing out petrol onto a hot exhaust! I was riding a bike that could potentially have erupted into a fireball. ~Eyerolls~ Anyway, he tucked it away against the swingarm so now it just drips onto the road. So today she's in for her first big service. I've put 7000 miles on her since I got her so I've asked them to look at EVERYTHING. The engine feels, frankly, like it's full of gravel, which is no great surprise after it was so abused. Water in the carbs four, five times. I kinda lost count. So today she's in for a full service, a replacement fuse as my lights aren't working right (The middle "running light" option doesn't work anymore), and a replacement chain-tightening nut (I dunno the right phrase for it) as the other is all worn and scored and near rounded off. FINALLY! I have a running, dependable bike. Come the bike show later this month I'm going to get her some nice little things. A better seat, some crash bungs... Hopefully the end of my long, somewhat gory saga with my '98 model Bandit S 1200 is in sight! mood: hopeful |

So, I went out last night on my bike with the intention of going to a pub to meet some friends while they watch the Flames game. Personally, I am NOT a Flames fan, but I'll put up with it to see my friends. Anyways, about halfway down the back alley, I'm thinking, "This is a bit dark. I'll turn the brights on." THAT's when I realized my regular headlight was burnt out. I grumble a bit, take the bike back and call a cab. This morning, I check the net to see if any local bike shops are open today. Of COURSE not. Not a single shop is open in the whole city that I live in. GRRR!!!! I tried Canadian Tire and another autoparts store. No luck. I'm stuck without a daytime light for my bike til tomorrow. Makes me a bit frustrated to say the least, cuz now I'm without transportation til I get that fixed. Now, I've never had to replace a bulb on any bike that I've owned, so I'm a bit wary about how to do it. I've got the manual for it, but it doesn't make a lot of sense. Can someone here maybe spell it out for a lefthanded person? It's a 1984 KZ440LTD Kawasaki. TIA. :) mood: frustrated music: I Love the World - Discovery Channel |

| TONIGHT: Strangelove: 20th Anniversary of 'Pretty Hate Machine' |
|

|
| |
Friday, November 6th, Strangelove pays tribute to NINE INCH NAILS. In the back room, DJs Tomas Diablo (Villainy), Joe Radio (Death Guild), and Orko (Dancing Ghosts) play the best of Nine Inch Nails and like-minded industrial, electro, and goth. In the front room, DJs Unit 77 (Attack Haus) and Prince Charming (Apocalypso) spin dark 80s and new wave. We will be giving away tickets to see NITZER EBB at SLIM’S on Wednesday, November 18th. http://www.slims-sf.com/slims-bin/showcal?date=2009-11-1820 years ago, Trent Reznor took advantage of his position as a handyman and janitor at a music studio to record and develop his own music. He played most of the instruments himself, and sequenced it all on a Macintosh Plus. The end result was ‘Pretty Hate Machine’, the album that introduced emotion and catchy riffs to industrial music, and introduced industrial music to a whole new audience. Reznor would go on to become THE voice of the 90s, noisily aggressive and coldly detached, and tortured by betrayal and self-obsession. His influence can be heard in virtually every electro-industrial act that came after him. In April of 2009, Trent Reznor announced that he was retiring Nine Inch Nails, possibly for good. But we can’t expect him to stay quiet for too long. He has recently released a series of video “jam-sessions” with Bauhaus frontman Peter Murphy, covering influential tracks like Joy Division’s ‘Atmosphere’, the Normal’s ‘Warm Leatherette’, and Lou Reed’s ‘Nightclubbing’. And Gary Numan has announced that he will be working on new music with Trent Reznor next year. NIN is dead – long live Trent Reznor and his incredible music and passion. Strangelove is every first Friday at the CAT CLUB (Folsom and 8th). With different themes and guests every month, there’s always something new and interesting at Strangelove. Drink Special: the Perfect Drug Details below... I think last time I posted here Id finished my trip around Ladakh and the worlds highest motorable passes. I'm moving south now down to Goa but took a detour to travel around Rajasthan, land of the kings. Just about every town has a fort and a Maha Raja. Jaisalmer is at the outer reaches of the state to the far east nearly in Pakistan. Its also in the desert. Its been a major trading town for nearly a thousand years. The fort is 850 years old and is amazing. heres a little vid of the drive up through the gates inside the fort to my guest house. I also stopped in Pushkar for the camel fair. thousands of camels congregating in the desert every year for this major fair. the gypsie girls are really enticing. ( Read more... )

I nearly got u-turned into on my way into work in the morning yesterday -- but it was a small deal, I stopped, idiot saw me, I got out of Dodge. No adrenaline, just angry. And then I got left-turned on my way home from work last night. I'm fine, I didn't go down, but I did have a bit of an off-road excursion avoiding the dildo in the pickup truck. He was facing me turning left into a road to my right. He was stopped, and then he was inching, and then he was slowly, slowly completing his turn... and by the time I realized it wasn't inching, it was turning, it was way too late for me to touch the brakes so I grooved VERY far right around his front bumper, had a bit of a close encounter with a pile of leaves and underbrush on the side of the road (ttfl for no trees and a hard shoulder right there) before reentering paved territory. Happily he was turning so slowly and steadily -- you know how your brain makes lightning-fast calculations in situations like this? -- that I knew exactly how much space I'd have in front of him when I got there, swerved to put my tire right on the edge of the pavement so that my saddlebag would not bonk off his headlight, and then went into the weeds for a bit... You know that noise you make, deep in your throat, when you involuntarily suck in air and it kind of rattles your vocal chords? That one. And then the adrenaline shakes. Rode home kinda wobbly, gave my bike a big hug and had a nice glass of Ardmore. Haven't had a close call like that in years.:-/
